What is a hysterectomy?
A hysterectomy is the surgical removal of the uterus. It can include the removal of the ovaries and cervix but does not always.
There are many different surgical approaches to remove the uterus. These include:
- Abdominal
- Vaginal
- Laparoscopic
- Robotic
The different approaches can determine the length of recovery. The less invasive types such as robotic and laparoscopic hysterectomy usually have faster recovery.
What are the reasons for hysterectomy?
Each patient is different but some common reasons are:
- Abnormal vaginal bleeding
- Fibroids
- Prolapse
- Uterine or endometrial cancer

What are the symptoms after a hysterectomy?
Most women have no symptoms and feel better after surgery. Women may have early menopausal symptoms if their ovaries are removed. These symptoms include hot flushes and lower sex drive.
How long is recovery from hysterectomy?
It is usually 6-8 weeks but you should talk with your surgeon to be cleared for certain activites.
Does a hysterectomy cause weight gain?
There can be some weight gain as a result of the menopausal symptoms if the ovaries are removed.
