What is Infertility?
Infertility is the inability to become pregnant with 12 months of regular intercourse. This is in women under 35 years of age. In women over 35 years old the time is reduced to 6 months.
Causes of Infertility
There are many causes. It can be due to issues with either partner or both partners. These include:
- Low or absent sperm counts
- Lack of menstrual cycles
- Structural problems in the Fallopian tubes
- Endometriosis
- Hormonal issues including Thyroid disease
Infertility Diagnosis
This is a very stressful and emotional process. You will have an experienced OB/GYN to guide you through this process. The first step is seeing your doctor who will take a detailed history. This will include a menstrual history. The next steps may include:
- Sperm analysis
- Blood work
- Imaging of the uterus and Fallopian tubes
- Surgical assessment for other diseases
Infertility Treatment
Treatment depends on the underlying cause. Sometimes surgery or certain medications can improve the chances of conceiving. If the cause cannot be determined, some couples choose to pursue IVF.
